A Modern Tribute to a Historic Movement

A new chapter in Norwich heritage was celebrated this week with the unveiling of a blue plaque at Kett’s Heights. The plaque commemorates Robert Kett, the leader of the 1549 uprising, and marks the historic site where he and his supporters gathered almost five centuries ago. Local residents, supporters of the Friends of Kett’s Heights and invited guests joined the Lord Mayor of Norwich for the ceremony which highlighted both the history of the site and the community effort behind its ongoing restoration.

A Place Shaped by History

Kett’s Heights is one of Norwich’s best-kept secrets. Set above the city, the site offers striking views across the skyline and holds layers of history within its slopes. Visitors can still see the remains of the medieval St Michael’s Chapel. The hillside was later reshaped into Victorian pleasure gardens and woodland walkways. Most famously, it is recognised as the place where Robert Kett and his followers gathered in 1549 before marching on the city in their call for fairer treatment of ordinary people during a period of land enclosure and social unrest.

Celebrating the Blue Plaque

The newly installed blue plaque serves as a permanent reminder of the significance of Kett’s Heights in telling the story of Norwich. During the unveiling, the Lord Mayor spoke warmly about the importance of honouring those who fought for fairness and community values. The event also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of the volunteers who care for the site throughout the year.

The ceremony brought together supporters of local heritage and residents who value the green spaces that help shape Norwich’s identity.

Why It Matters Today

The plaque is more than a historical marker. It reflects the continued relevance of Robert Kett’s story and the spirit of community action. His stand for justice and fairness continues to resonate, and the location of the plaque invites reflection on how the events of 1549 shaped the city we know today.

The site has undergone significant improvements in recent years. Paths have been restored, and access has been improved, making Kett’s Heights more welcoming for visitors of all ages. The unveiling is another positive step in raising awareness of this treasured space and reinforcing the importance of protecting and celebrating local heritage.

Bringing the Blue Plaque to Life

We were proud to support this project through the design and making of the blue plaque. The plaque measures 300 millimetres in diameter and is produced using cast aluminium to ensure strength and long term durability. It features a blue powder coated background with three drill holes to allow secure wall mounting. To protect the raised lettering and maintain a high-quality finish, a clear gloss acrylic lacquer was applied. Every stage of the process was completed with close attention to detail so the plaque will remain a fitting and long lasting tribute to the heritage of Kett’s Heights.
