AI mock-ups vs real cast bronze plaques

Over the past year or so, we've noticed more and more customers sending us AI-generated images as inspiration for their bronze plaques. Whether they've used ChatGPT, Midjourney or another AI image generator, the results are often incredibly impressive.

And honestly, we think it's brilliant.

AI has made it much easier for people to communicate their ideas. Instead of trying to describe a design in words, you can generate a concept in minutes and send it straight to us. It gives us a fantastic starting point for a conversation and helps us understand the style you're aiming for.

That said, AI is creating an image, not a real cast bronze plaque.

While these concepts can look remarkably realistic, there are often subtle (and sometimes not so subtle!) differences between what AI produces and what can actually be made in a traditional foundry.

In this article, we'll compare a few AI concepts with the finished plaques we produced and explain why those differences exist.

AI doesn't know how bronze plaques are made

The clever thing about AI is that it can generate almost anything you ask it to. The only thing it doesn't understand is how a real bronze plaque is made. It isn't thinking about moulds, pattern making or how molten bronze flows into a mould. It simply creates what looks good in an image. That's where our experience comes in.

When we receive an AI concept, we don't see it as a finished design. We see it as a brilliant starting point that can be refined into something that not only looks beautiful but can actually be cast.

The biggest bifference

One thing we notice almost every time is the way AI creates decorative artwork. If you've asked AI to generate a military badge, flowers, an animal or even a portrait, it will often make it look almost sculptural, with deep three-dimensional modelling and lots of rounded detail.

It looks fantastic on screen, but our cast bronze plaques are a little different.

Our motifs are produced in a flatter relief that sits proudly on the plaque, much like the lettering itself. It's a classic style that ensures the details remain clear for many years to come.

So while the finished plaque might not have exactly the same sculpted appearance as the AI image, it will have the authentic look of a genuine cast bronze plaque.

Bronze doesn't always look like AI thinks it does

AI also loves dramatic lighting. It tends to create bronze that's incredibly shiny, with bold green patinas, glowing highlights and reflections that look almost cinematic.

Real bronze has much more character.

Every plaque is hand finished, and the final appearance depends on the finish chosen, the polishing process and the natural texture of the casting itself. Those subtle variations are part of what makes cast bronze such a beautiful material.

No two plaques are ever completely identical, and that's something we'd never want to change.

Sometimes AI designs can't be cast

This is probably the biggest surprise for many customers. Occasionally, an AI image includes details that simply wouldn't survive the casting process. It might create lettering that's too thin, decorative features that appear to float, or very deep undercuts that can't be removed from the mould.

Rather than saying "that can't be done", we'll usually suggest a few small changes that keep the overall look while making the design suitable for casting. More often than not, those adjustments are barely noticeable, but they make all the difference when it comes to producing a plaque that's both beautiful and practical.

AI is a brilliant design tool

We genuinely enjoy receiving AI-generated concepts. They're often far more helpful than a rough sketch or a written description because they instantly show us the style you're looking for. Think of them as the first draft, not the finished product.

Our job is to take that initial idea, apply years of casting experience and create a plaque that captures everything you liked about the concept while staying true to traditional bronze casting techniques.

Sometimes the finished plaque ends up looking incredibly close to the AI image.

Sometimes we make a few subtle changes to improve the design or make it suitable for casting. Either way, our goal is always the same: to produce a plaque that you'll be proud of for decades to come.
